It is a long enough journey that Jodhpur is best enjoyed as an overnight stay rather than a same-day round trip.

The NH 48 and NH 25 corridor through Ajmer, Beawar and Pali is the fastest and best-maintained route in both directions, with mostly four-lane driving. The state-highway alternatives add time for little gain, so the main highway is the sensible choice unless you want a quieter, more scenic drive.

How to travel between Jaipur and Jodhpur

You have four good options. A private car or taxi is the most flexible, taking about five and a half hours and letting you stop at Ajmer or Pushkar on the way. The train is comfortable and often the smartest choice, with more than twenty daily services and the Vande Bharat Express covering the route faster than most cars manage, while overnight trains let you sleep through the journey. Direct flights take only about an hour and suit those short on time, though you lose the scenery. Frequent buses, including air-conditioned Volvo sleepers, are the budget option, many running overnight. For speed choose the flight or Vande Bharat, for a road trip with stops choose the car.

What to see in Jodhpur

Jodhpur rewards the journey. Its centrepiece is Mehrangarh Fort, one of the largest and most dramatic forts in India, towering 120 metres above the city with palaces, courtyards and a superb museum inside. Below it spreads the old Blue City, a maze of indigo-washed houses best seen from the ramparts, along with the marble cenotaph of Jaswant Thada and the grand Umaid Bhawan Palace, part royal residence, part hotel, part museum. Dive into the bazaars around the Clock Tower and Sardar Market for spices, textiles and handicrafts, cool off at the restored Toorji Ka Jhalra stepwell and try Marwari specialities like mirchi vada and makhaniya lassi. Jodhpur is also the gateway to the Thar desert and the Bishnoi villages.

Best time to travel and tips

The comfortable season is October to March, when Jodhpur's desert climate is pleasant, as summers are fierce. If you are driving, leave Jaipur between 6 and 7 in the morning to clear the city traffic and reach Jodhpur with daylight to spare for Mehrangarh before sunset. Book train and flight tickets ahead, as the fast options fill up, carry water for the drier stretches and keep speeds moderate on the unlit patches near Beawar and Pali if you travel after dark.
