The best routes from Jaipur to Jaisalmer run around 559 to 605 km and take about 10 hours, across the flat, arid landscape of western Rajasthan. The route via the Jaipur-Nagaur Road, Nagaur Road and NH11 is the shortest at about 559 km, while the NH11 route is a similar time over a slightly longer distance.

Whichever route you take, this is a long desert drive of the better part of a day, so it is best broken up or planned as part of a wider Rajasthan itinerary, most often via Jodhpur, the Blue City, which sits roughly midway between Jaipur and Jaisalmer and makes a natural and rewarding overnight stop in its own right. Because of the sheer distance, many travellers sensibly prefer to break the journey at Jodhpur or to take the overnight train or a flight instead of driving the whole way across the desert in one long stretch.

Ways to travel from Jaipur to Jaisalmer

Given the long distance, there are several ways to make the journey, each worth considering:

• By road: by private car or taxi or by bus including overnight coaches, taking around 10 hours. It is a comfortable option if broken with a stop and the most flexible of all, letting you see the changing desert landscape and stop at towns like Jodhpur along the way.

• By train: trains connect Jaipur and Jaisalmer, including convenient overnight services, a restful and economical way to cover the long distance while you sleep, arriving fresh in the morning ready to explore.

• By air: you can fly, usually via Jodhpur, which has good air connections and then drive the last stretch on to Jaisalmer, saving considerable time on the long desert crossing, a good option if your time is short.

For a long trip like this, the overnight train or a flight via Jodhpur can be far more restful than driving the whole way in one go, though a private car offers the most freedom to explore Rajasthan and its towns along the route at your own pace. Many travellers combine them, driving one way via Jodhpur and taking the train or flight the other, to get the best of both.

About Jaisalmer: the Golden City

Jaisalmer is one of Rajasthan's most enchanting and distinctive cities, known the world over as the Golden City for the honey-gold sandstone from which its great fort, its havelis and its houses are all built, glowing a warm amber in the desert sun, especially at sunrise and sunset. Set deep in the Thar desert near India's western frontier, it was once a great and wealthy trading post on the old caravan routes between India and Central Asia and that wealth built some of the finest carved stone architecture anywhere in India.

At its heart rises the magnificent Jaisalmer Fort or Sonar Qila, one of the very few living, inhabited forts in the world, still home to shops, homes, temples, havelis and guesthouses within its ancient golden walls, so that a quarter of the old city still lives inside the fort. Around and below it spread the old city's exquisitely carved havelis, its winding bazaars and, beyond the walls, the great golden sand dunes of the open desert. Remote, romantic and utterly unlike anywhere else, Jaisalmer is a highlight of any Rajasthan journey and a world away in feel from the busy Golden Triangle cities.

Things to do in Jaisalmer

There is a great deal to enjoy in and around Jaisalmer:

• Jaisalmer Fort: the magnificent golden living fort rising above the city, its narrow lanes full of shops, homes, beautiful Jain temples, havelis and cafes, with sweeping views over the desert from its ramparts, the beating heart of Jaisalmer.

• The havelis: the exquisitely carved golden-sandstone mansions of the old merchant families, above all the famous and much-photographed Patwon ki Haveli, along with Salim Singh ki Haveli and Nathmal ki Haveli, true masterpieces of intricate stone craftsmanship.

• Gadisar Lake: the tranquil, historic man-made reservoir on the edge of town, ringed by little shrines, temples and ghats, lovely and peaceful at sunrise and sunset and good for a gentle boat ride and birdwatching.

• The Sam sand dunes: the great golden dunes about 40 km outside the city, the classic Thar desert experience, the base for camel and jeep safaris and the desert camps.

• A desert camel safari and camp: riding a camel over the dunes as the sun sets, then staying the night at a desert camp with folk music, dance and dinner under a vast starry sky, is the quintessential, unforgettable Jaisalmer experience.

• The bazaars: the colourful, atmospheric markets around the fort, full of textiles, mirror-work, embroidery, leather goods, silver and handicrafts, are a real delight to wander and shop in.

A couple of days lets you enjoy the fort, the havelis, the city and a desert night at a relaxed pace, taking in the very essence of Jaisalmer, while longer allows more of the desert and its villages.

The Thar desert and camel safaris

The great draw of Jaisalmer, beyond its glorious golden architecture, is the Thar desert itself, which begins just beyond the city. At the Sam and Khuri sand dunes, a short drive out of town, you can have the classic Rajasthan desert experience: a camel ride over the rippling golden sands as the sun sinks and turns the desert to fire, the vast, humbling silence and space of the desert and a night at a desert camp with folk music, Rajasthani dance, a barbecue dinner and a canopy of stars overhead.

This desert experience is what draws many travellers all the way out to Jaisalmer and it is genuinely unforgettable. Desert camps range from simple tented sites to luxurious "glamping" resorts with fine dining, so there is something for every budget and taste and a sunset camel safari followed by a night under the stars is, for many, the single highlight of their entire Rajasthan trip. It is best enjoyed firmly in the cooler months, when the desert days are pleasant and warm and the desert nights are crisp and cool, rather than the punishing heat of summer.

Best time to visit Jaisalmer

The best time to visit Jaisalmer is the cool season, October to March, when the desert weather is pleasant and warm by day and cool, sometimes cold, at night, ideal for exploring the fort, the city and the dunes and for a comfortable desert camp experience under the stars. This is very much the peak season and it includes the colourful Jaisalmer Desert Festival, usually held in winter, with folk music, dance, camel events and competitions.

Summers, from April to June, are extremely hot in the Thar desert, with fierce, dry daytime heat well above what is comfortable, which makes sightseeing around the fort and, especially, desert safaris genuinely unpleasant, so the summer months are best avoided altogether. The monsoon, from July to September, brings a little relief, some cloud and the occasional shower to the desert and thinner crowds. For the classic, comfortable Jaisalmer and desert experience, aim firmly for the cool months of October to March and book your desert camp and fort accommodation ahead in the peak season, as the best places fill up.
