What is the best route from Delhi to Haldwani?

The best and fastest route from Delhi to Haldwani is via NH9, the main national highway that runs east and north from Delhi through Moradabad, Rampur and Rudrapur to Haldwani, at the foot of the hills. At about 302 km and 5 hours 42 minutes, it is the most direct of the options, and, crucially, entirely across the flat plains.

Because Haldwani lies on the plains at the base of the hills, and not up in the mountains, the drive is a straightforward, flat highway run all the way, without the slow, winding mountain climb needed to reach the hill stations above. This makes it noticeably quicker to reach than driving all the way up to Nainital or the other Kumaon hill towns, a useful thing to know if Haldwani or Kathgodam is your actual destination, or if you plan to break the journey here before the hills. The main variable is city traffic at the Delhi end, so an early start helps you clear the capital quickly and enjoy a fast run east and north across the plains.

Ways to travel from Delhi to Haldwani

Haldwani is very well connected, and there are several good ways to make the journey:

• By road: by private car or taxi, or by bus including comfortable Volvo and other overnight and daytime coaches, taking around 5.5 to 6 hours on the fast NH9. A flexible option, and much the easiest if you are continuing straight up into the Kumaon hills, as your vehicle carries you all the way.

• By train: Kathgodam, the terminus of the railway and right beside Haldwani, is well connected to Delhi by fast and overnight trains, making rail a very convenient and restful way to reach the area, covering the long, flat plains stretch while you relax, before continuing up by road.

• By air: you can fly to Pantnagar airport, about 35 km away, though flights there are limited and weather-dependent, then drive to Haldwani and on into the hills, an option worth considering when time is short.

For most travellers, the train to Kathgodam or a private car is the easiest choice, with the train especially convenient and restful as the railhead sits right beside Haldwani at the foot of the hills, while a private car is best if you want to continue seamlessly up into the mountains without changing. Many combine them, taking the overnight train up to Kathgodam and then a car for the hills, and driving back, or the reverse.

For most travellers, though, Haldwani is a stop rather than a stay, a place to pass through, change transport from train to car, or spend a single night before or after the hills, rather than a sightseeing destination in its own right. Best time to visit Haldwani and Kumaon

Haldwani, on the plains, can be reached comfortably year-round, though it shares the plains' climate: hot in summer, from April to June, pleasant in the cooler months from October to March, and wet in the monsoon. The monsoon, July to September, brings rain, and, more importantly, can affect and occasionally block the winding hill roads above, so it needs care if you are heading up.

The best time for the wider Kumaon trip, though, really depends on the hills above rather than Haldwani itself. For Nainital and the Kumaon hill stations, the summer, March to June, is the popular season, when people come up to escape the plains' heat, and the winter, October to February, brings crisp air, clear Himalayan views and possible snow, while the monsoon is best avoided for the mountain roads. So plan your Haldwani journey around the season you want for the hills, since that is where the real trip lies.
