Either way, plan for around 10.5 hours of driving across Rajasthan, mostly on the fast NE4 expressway, so this is very much an overnight or, better, a multi-day trip rather than anything that can sensibly be done in a single day.

What is the best route from Delhi to Nathdwara?

The best and fastest route from Delhi to Nathdwara uses the new NE4, the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway, running southwest across Rajasthan, at about 676 to 696 km and around 10.5 hours. This is quicker and smoother than the older NH48 highway, which is a little shorter in distance but can be considerably slower.

Ways to travel from Delhi to Nathdwara

Given the long distance, there are several good ways to make the journey:

• By train and road: a very practical and comfortable option, take a train from Delhi to Mavli Junction, the nearest railhead about 30 km away or to Udaipur, then a short taxi ride to Nathdwara, covering the long distance restfully by rail, including on convenient overnight services.

• By air and road: you can fly to Udaipur airport, about 50 km from Nathdwara, then drive the short distance, a good and time-saving way to reach the town given the long overland journey from Delhi.

• By road: by private car or bus, taking around 10.5 hours, best broken over two days with an overnight at Jaipur, making a fuller and more relaxed Rajasthan trip of it rather than one very long day.

About Nathdwara: the abode of Shrinathji

Nathdwara, meaning the Gateway to the Lord, is one of the most revered Krishna pilgrimage towns in all of India, set on the banks of the Banas river in the green Mewar hills of Rajasthan, near Udaipur. The whole town grew up around its famous temple and its life still revolves entirely around the worship and service of its beloved deity, from the flower and sweet sellers to the artists and the pilgrims who fill its lanes.

A special and much-loved feature of the temple is that the deity is presented for darshan or sacred viewing, several times through the day, each time freshly bathed, dressed and adorned according to the hour, the season and the festival, showing Shrinathji in different moods, dress and settings from dawn to night. These beautiful darshans or jhankis, each have their own set timing and their own character and pilgrims come specially to receive one or more of them. Best time to visit Nathdwara

The best time to visit Nathdwara is October to March, when the weather is pleasant and comfortable, ideal for the temple and any sightseeing around the town. The great festivals of the year, above all Janmashtami, the joyful celebration of the birth of Lord Krishna and Annakut, the great food offering around Diwali and Govardhan Puja, along with the colourful festival of Holi, are the most spectacular and moving times to visit, when the temple and the whole town are at their most vibrant, festive and devotional, though also, naturally, their most crowded, so plan and book well ahead if you visit then.

Summers, from April to June, are hot in this part of Rajasthan, so they are best avoided for comfort, while the monsoon, from July to September, brings some welcome relief and greenery to the surrounding Mewar hills. For most pilgrims and travellers, the cool season, October to March, is the ideal time to visit and the most comfortable for the long journey from Delhi. Whenever you go, do check the temple's daily darshan timings in advance, which vary by season and festival, so you can plan your visit around them.
