Ajmer is about 131 to 134 km from Jaipur by road and the drive takes roughly two and a half hours on NH 48, the six-lane highway that runs through the marble town of Kishangarh on the way. The distance is almost identical in both directions, so the choice really comes down to the mode of travel and the exact route. It is short enough to be a comfortable day trip, though Ajmer and Pushkar together reward an overnight stay.

The direct NH 48 is the fastest and most reliable route in both directions, a well-maintained six-lane highway. The longer options add distance for little benefit and are only worth taking if you are joining the highway from a different part of the city.

How to travel between Jaipur and Ajmer

You have three good options. A private car or taxi is the most flexible, covering the trip in about two and a half hours and letting you stop at Kishangarh or carry on to Pushkar. The train is often the fastest choice, with more than twenty daily services and the quickest superfast trains taking well under two hours between Jaipur Junction and Ajmer Junction, so it is comfortable and cheap if the timings suit you. Frequent government and private buses, including air-conditioned Volvos, also run through the day and take a little over two hours. For a pilgrimage or a family trip with stops, the car wins; for speed and value, the train is hard to beat.

What to see in Ajmer and Pushkar

Ajmer's heart is the Ajmer Sharif Dargah, the shrine of the Sufi saint Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti, one of the most important pilgrimage sites in South Asia and busy with devotees of every faith. Around it lie the striking Adhai Din Ka Jhonpra mosque, the lakeside Ana Sagar, the hilltop Taragarh Fort, Akbar's Fort and Museum and the golden Jain temple of Soniji Ki Nasiyan. Just 15 km away, Pushkar is one of India's holiest towns, home to a rare temple to Lord Brahma, the sacred Pushkar Lake with its bathing ghats and the famous camel fair each November. Most visitors combine Ajmer and Pushkar in a single trip.

Best time to travel and tips

The pleasant season is October to March, ideal for both the drive and for temple visits, while Pushkar is at its liveliest during the November camel fair. Book train tickets ahead, as the fast services fill quickly and start early for a day trip so you have enough time at the dargah and in Pushkar. At the shrines, dress modestly and cover your head, expect crowds and security checks and keep your belongings close. If you are driving, NH 48 is fast but watch for heavy truck traffic near Kishangarh.
