Either way, plan for around 7 hours of driving, plus stops, with the last stretch a slower, winding climb up the mountain road into Nainital, so this is very much an overnight or, better, a multi-day trip rather than anything that can sensibly be rushed in a single day.

What is the best route from Delhi to Nainital?

The best and fastest route from Delhi to Nainital is via NH9, the main highway that runs east and north from Delhi through Moradabad, Rampur and Rudrapur to Haldwani, at the foot of the hills, and then up the winding mountain road to Nainital. At about 306 km and 7 hours, it is the most direct of the options.

The journey has two very distinct parts, worth understanding when you plan your timings. First comes the long, flat, straightforward drive across the plains from Delhi through Moradabad, Rampur and Rudrapur to Haldwani or Kathgodam, at the very base of the mountains, on good main roads. Then comes the slower, scenic, twisting climb up the hill road from there to Nainital, gaining altitude through forested slopes with the temperature dropping as you rise.

The plains stretch is quick and easy, while the mountain section is genuinely beautiful but slow, with plenty of curves and, in season, some traffic, so allow generous time and expect the last part of the drive to be winding as you climb into the hills. Starting early from Delhi means you clear the plains and reach Nainital in good daylight, with the lovely first view of the lake to look forward to.

Ways to travel from Delhi to Nainital

There are several good ways to make the journey, each worth considering:

• By road: by private car or taxi, or by bus including comfortable Volvo and other overnight coaches, taking around 7 hours. The most flexible option by far, letting you stop as you like, break the journey, and continue at your own pace, and much the best for exploring the wider Kumaon region and its lakes.

• By train and road: take a train from Delhi to Kathgodam, the nearest railhead, about 35 km from Nainital at the foot of the hills, then a taxi up the winding hill road, a good and restful way to cover the long, flat plains stretch of the journey by rail.

• By air and road: you can fly to Pantnagar airport, about 70 km away, though flights there are limited and weather-dependent, then drive up to Nainital, an option worth considering if your time is short.

For most travellers, a private car is the easiest and most flexible choice, especially for exploring Nainital and the surrounding Kumaon hills and lakes, while the train to Kathgodam is a restful and popular way to cover the long plains stretch before the short drive up. Many combine them, taking the train one way and driving the other.

• Naina Devi Temple: the revered temple to the goddess Naina Devi, one of the sacred Shakti Peeths, standing on the northern shore of the lake, a key spiritual site that draws pilgrims and offers a peaceful, atmospheric place to visit by the water.

• The Mall Road: the lively lakeside promenade, lined with shops, cafes, restaurants, hotels and stalls, the buzzing social heart of the town, wonderful for an unhurried evening stroll, some shopping and people-watching by the water.

• Snow View Point: reached by an aerial ropeway, or cable car, that climbs high above the town, with spectacular, sweeping views of the snow-capped Himalayan peaks, including distant Nanda Devi, on a clear day.

• Naina Peak, or China Peak: the highest point around Nainital, at over 2,600 metres, offering the finest panoramic views of the lake, the town and the great Himalayan range, reached by a scenic walk or a pony ride.

Nainital is the gateway to the wider Kumaon region, which holds a great deal more to explore beyond the town itself. Nearby lie the other lakes of the "Lake District", Bhimtal, Sattal and Naukuchiatal, each beautiful, greener, quieter and less crowded than Nainital, and each well worth a half-day visit, an easy and rewarding add-on to a Nainital trip for those wanting a calmer, more natural pace.

Beyond the lakes, the Kumaon hills lead on to lovely spots like Ranikhet, Almora, Mukteshwar and Kausani, with their unspoilt views of the high, snow-clad Himalayas. Best time to visit Nainital

Nainital is a year-round destination, but the experience varies a good deal by season. The most popular time is the summer, roughly March to June, when travellers from the sweltering plains escape up to Nainital for its cool, pleasant mountain weather and the lake at its loveliest, ideal for boating, sightseeing and gentle walks. This is very much the peak season, so the town and the Mall Road are busiest and hotels dearest.

The winter, October to February, is cold and crisp, with beautifully clear mountain views on fine days, and December and January can bring snowfall to the hills, magical for a winter visit. The monsoon, July to September, brings heavy rain to the hills, which can cause landslides and disruptions on the winding mountain roads, so it is the least ideal time to drive up and needs real care. For most travellers, the spring and summer months, and the winter for clear views and snow, are the sweet spots, while the monsoon is best approached with caution.

• Take NH9 via Rampur and Haldwani for the fastest, most direct route.

• Allow around 7 hours by road, plus stops, and expect a slow, winding final climb.

• Consider the train to Kathgodam, then a taxi up, to cover the plains restfully.
